First of all I love my Nest thermostat and as geeky as I am I had to see if I could write some Cocoa code to access it and pull back the data.  Ultimately I wanted to build a status bar application to run on my Mac that would periodically update and display the current temperature.  There is no public API as of yet but hopefully there will be soon.  I searched the internet to see if anyone had written anything similar.  Low and behold I found a Python script that would access the Nest data.  You can get Scott Bakers Python script here https://github.com/smbaker/pynest .  Thanks to Scott’s script I was able to see what data was required to make the request to the Nest website.  This made my work a lot easier.  I have created a basic Cocoa status bar application that uses my custom Nest class to query the Nest web site for my Nests data.  I may release the code once I have cleaned it up some if anyone is interested.

Here is a little project I am working on.  SmartGarage is an iPhone app that allows you to monitor/control your garage door.  There is some hardware that connects to your garage door opener that consists of an Arduino UNO, Ethernet shield, a relay module, 2 magnetic switches and a few resistors.  It is getting close to being done so more to come.

Sphero is like nothing you’ve seen before. It’s the first robotic ball that you control with a tilt, touch, or swing from your smartphone or tablet. Sphero delivers a unique mixed-reality experience with single and multi-player games that let you engage in the virtual world and play in the real one. Most of all, Sphero will challenge, entertain, and always surprise you. It’s the ball evolved.

I have one of these on order and it should be shipping soon.  Hopefully in time for Christmas.
